Squash

Cucurbita

  • When to Plant: Plant after last frost is passed and when soil is above 50F. Usually, waiting till the second week in may is best.

    Light: Full Sun

Soil: Plant in well-drained soil that has been maintained and amended regularly. Try to rotate crops annually to avoid disease issues and attracting the same pests.

Try to plant your squash in a separate bed away from other vegetables to avoid pest control issues.

  • Provide moisture when the top 2-4” of soil is dry. Time between watering cycles is determined by your climate and plant location.

  • Fertilize about once per month, according to the needs of your soil. A soil test in fall or winter months when the garden is not in use is ideal to determine what you should add. Check out the Kansas Garden Guide for more information on fertilizers.

  • Harvest squash after it ripens but before it becomes too large. I find, it is always better to harvest on the early side to avoid large, seedy fruit.

  • Did you know that you can eat squash blossoms? You can harvest blossoms and enjoy stuffed or even fried.
