AIR PLANTS

Tillandsia

Family Bromeliaceae

  • Light: Air plants like medium, filtered light. Many Tillandsia species will color and flower if provided enough light

    Temperature: 65-85 F

Humidity: medium to high; avoid drafty areas but also allow adequate air circulation around the plant

Placing air plants in terrariums or other enclosed places can lead to decay.

  • Water: Air plants are capable of capturing moisture through their leaves via trichomes. There are two ideal watering methods for air plants:

    1. Shower under the faucet or watering can until all leaves have darkened in color.

    2. Bathe in a tub of tepid water and fertilizer if desired. Don’t allow to soak for longer than 5-10 minutes.

With air plants, watering frequency is important as well. Since humidity is seasonal, watering routines should be adjusted from summer to winter. In summer, water 1 time weekly. In winter, you may need to water 1-2 times weekly depending on the microclimate around your plant.

Air plant watering greatly varies by species. Tune into my air plant care video to learn more about watering practices.

Fertilizing: Incorporate fertilizer into your watering cycle once per month March through September. Dilute an all purpose fertilizer (20-20-20) by half OR use your favorite fertilizer rated for houseplant use in your water.

  • The Bromeliaceae family boasts many famous plants including pineapple (Ananas)!

  • (Listed in order of commonality…)

    • Dehydration from infrequent watering or dry air

    • Rot from poor air circulation

  • Air plants can flower if provided enough light and water. You’d be surprised how much growth air plants put on with time and care.
