Dill 'Fernleaf'

$5.00

Pre-order for local pick-up available as early as March 15.

‘Fernleaf’ dill is an All-America Selection Winner, and you know how I love winners! This cultivated variety of dill is a dwarf and is one of the slowest to bolt dills. That means more leafy goodness for longer in the summer! I can’t wait to grow this variety in my porch garden this summer.

Add dill to your garden for aroma therapy, pollinator support, cut flowers, and fresh dill pickles. I also enjoy dill in a vegetable dip or cream cheese sandwich spread. Is your mouth watering yet? Read more about dill below.

A Note from the Grower

Dill is a flavor that every American should be able to invoke in their mind at the ready. It is the flavor of summer cookouts and the pickle spear on the side at your favorite deli. My mother always told me when I was growing up that dill reminded her of two beloved aunts, and summers sunning in slips. I think that is the epitome of this herb. Dill is an old-fashioned flavor that evokes memories. It also creates memories!

This year, I added two new varieties of dill to trial based on two factors—bolting and growth habit. ‘Fernleaf’ is an All-America Selection Winner for its dwarf growth habit and slow to bolt genetics. Perfect for container growing! On the other hand, while ‘Teddy’ is faster to bolt and slightly larger in size, it’s supposed to be more productive. It may be a happy medium between the dwarf ‘Fernleaf’ and full-size ‘Dukat.’ We shall see!

Similar to mint, dill is a touch difficult to control. So, unless you want a fence row of the stuff (which is okay), avoid allowing the plant to go to seed by harvesting/pruning regularly. Read up on care in the Plant Guide.
